New Jersey drug investigation leads to the arrest of 3 men

Three men have been arrested in a narcotics case involving drug trafficking in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Warrants were executed at approximately 5:00 p.m. on June 2, according to authorities. The Mercer County Narcotics Task Force seized more than $30,000 in narcotics in the conclusion of an investigation that was ongoing for four months.

The target of the investigation was detained after a motor vehicle stop in Trenton, and the other two men were separately detained in Trenton as well. According to authorities, the target of the investigation was traveling in a 2006 silver Dodge Magnum with a hidden trap in the center console. The trap allegedly contained 53 bricks of heroin as well as a loaded and defaced Smith & Wesson revolver, a stolen .40 caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun, a large capacity magazine with 24 .40 caliber bullets and $1,000 in cash.

Two other vehicles were seized in the arrests and police estimate the value of the seized drugs to be roughly $31,860. The 26-year-old man who was the focus of the investigation was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, two counts of possession with the intent to distribute within 500 feet of a park, three counts of possession with the intent to distribute and multiple additional counts. Another 26-year-old was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, among other drug-related counts. The third man was charged only with possession of a prescription legend drug and was released pending a future appearance in court.

A criminal defense attorney may be able to determine a viable strategy for a client in a similar situation. One line of inquiry would be determine if there was probable cause to stop and then search a vehicle in which drugs were allegedly found. A failure to have such cause could result in the evidence being declared inadmissible.
