New Jersey driver charged with DWI after 3-car accident

New Jersey State Police were called to the scene of an accident on Route 78 at 1:13 p.m. on Oct. 3. The collision occurred at mile marker 33.7 eastbound on the highway, and it involved an SUV and two tractor-trailers. When police arrived at the scene of the accident, they found one of the tractor-trailers overturned with diesel fuel leaking from it.

The 49-year-old driver of the SUV appeared intoxicated to authorities and allegedly performed poorly on a field sobriety test. He was then taken into custody at Somerville State Police Station. Once there, the man was further evaluated and charged with a criminal count of driving while impaired. Prior to the crash, others had called police to report that the man's SUV was being driven erratically on the road.

The 25-year-old driver of the overturned tractor-trailer was taken to Morristown Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries. Police said that they were not sure how the other tractor-trailer was involved in the accident. No other summons were given out, and authorities initially said that the accident was still under investigation. There was no word as to who the driver of the other tractor-trailer was or what that driver's condition was after the accident.

Anyone facing criminal drunk driving charges may wish to consult with a DUI defense attorney. An attorney may be able to help a driver avoid sentencing or negotiate a plea bargain on that individual's behalf. If the results of a field sobriety, blood or breath test are successfully disputed, the person charged may face a lesser sentence or full acquittal. It may also be argued that any erratic driving observed before an accident or traffic stop may be due to a defective vehicle or a medical emergency.
